Benefits total 30 percent of compensation
Employee benefits in March accounted for 30.8 percent of total compensation in the Middle Atlantic division, which includes Pennsylvania, or $9.39 of the $30.48-per-hour total.
The region-by-region range for total employer costs for compensation, meanwhile, ranged from $23.90 per hour in the South to $30.56 in the Northeast, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Wages and salaries have generally declined over the past eight years as health insurance and other benefits account for a greater share of total compensation costs.
In the Middle Atlantic division of the Northeast, health insurance benefits accounted for 7.1 percent of compensation. Health insurance costs ranged from 6.5 percent in New England to 8.1 percent in parts of the South.
