Employment woes for Australian graduates
The Chamber of Commerce in the Australian city of Sydney is warning that university graduates could have difficulties finding a job in the coming months.
The group says the global financial crisis is forcing employers to tighten their belts and avoid hiring new staff.
The executive director of the chamber, Patricia Forsythe, says there will be a significant reduction in the number of graduate positions on offer in Australia as a result.
"Talking to people, particularly in the finance sector, I think the word is that there'll be significant reduction in the number of graduate places that traditionally become available at this time of year," she said.
"Firms simply won't be in the business of hiring.
"Many of them will of course, rather than firing staff are simply waiting for vacancies to occur and will not fill them."
