Cllr tips teachers on financial planning
Teachers have been advised to invest their salaries by buying shares, properties, livestock and making meaningful bank savings.
Specially elected Councillor, Mr Damien Thapa told teachers at Masunga Senior Secondary School that instead of throwing parties for friends, they should invest so that they do not retire poor.
Cllr Thapa said for a long time teachers had been complaining that they were being underpaid while on the other hand they spend their salaries on alcohol and saving nothing.
He said the great challenge facing the teaching profession is the improper love affairs between teachers and students.
He called upon teacher organisations to address the problem before it tarnishes the good image of teachers.
Cllr urged teachers not to turn schools into fishing ponds but rather cast their fishing nets afar because children are sent to school to learn.
He said the culprits should do personal soul searching and go for professional counselling.
Cllr Thapa also raised a concern on lack of discipline in schools, saying students have lost direction and express themselves through vandalism and disruption of school properties. The teachers, he said, also live in fear of being attacked by students.
He said walking in schools at night is dangerous as the institutions have turned into harbours for thugs, gangsters, robbers and hooligans.
In order to restore dignity back to the teaching profession, all stakeholders should join hands and face the challenge.
Teachers day was celebrated under the theme, The teacher turning educational challenges into opportunities.
