Medical billing co expanding in Kalamazoo
The expansion of a Chicago-based medical-billing company's Michigan operations could create up to 650 new jobs, most of them in Kalamazoo, in the next five to seven years.
Accretive Health has partnered for three years with Ascension Health, the parent corporation of Borgess Health in Kalamazoo, on a number of projects -- including qualifying uninsured patients for charity care. The Ascension business prompted Accretive Health, which presently employs 350 people in Michigan, to expand operations in Kalamazoo and Detroit.
In addition to Borgess, Ascension Health owns Genesys Health System in Grand Blanc, St. Joseph Health System in Tawas and St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw.
The Michigan Economic Growth Authority last week approved a seven-year, $5.4 million tax incentive package for the company.
In Kalamazoo, where 500 of the 650 jobs would be created, the city commission is considering a three-year tax abatement and will assist the company in identifying downtown parking.
An economic analysis conducted by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. expects the expansion to create an additional 492 jobs indirectly.
