Free tax preparation program needs help
Free income tax preparation by Volunteers in Tax Assistance and sponsored by Salida Regional Library and the Internal Revenue Service, needs people to help during the upcoming tax season.
The program offers free income tax preparation, including electronic filing, for local taxpayers.
Volunteers prepare tax returns using IRS-provided PCs and software, and do associated tasks such as quality checking returns prepared by other volunteers.
Requirements include basic computer skills and rudimentary knowledge of income tax forms.
Starting in November, volunteers will receive tax rule training using IRS-provided study materials and will receive certification after passing an open-book test.
A local instructor will help new volunteers learn to use the tax preparation computer program.
Beginning Jan. 31, volunteers will help at the library tax site a minimum of three to six hours per week, according to workload.
The service will operate Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings through April 15. Volunteers are also needed for customer greeting, publicity and other jobs.
