County Offering Free Tax Preparation
As you get ready to file your taxes, you are reminded to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit, which gives as much as $4700 to low-income working families.
Hinds County and Jackson officials kicked off an awareness campaign at the Hinds County Human Resource Agency Thursday morning.
The site is one of 9 in the Jackson area, providing free tax preparation for families making less than $40,000 a year.
Last year more than a thousand tax returns were prepared for free at volunteer sites in Jackson, resulting in $1.7 million in refunds for participants.
"I came in last year, and they helped me with my taxes and did a good job," said Emma Lawson. "It didn't take that long. I thank God for it, because we need this help."
To find a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site near you, call 211. Volunteers are all trained by the IRS.
